In Their Own Words
Though photographs convey a story beyond words, sometimes a written narrative is necessary to tell a more complete story. This exhibition gives voice to the immigrants portrayed by including the story of their journey to American soil in written form along with their portrait. Each individual was interviewed by the artist so that their story could accompany the finished photograph. Instead of being placed alongside the work as a separate wall text, their words were written out on strips of paper. These were then glued to and finished with the print so that the individual’s story remains inextricably linked to their photograph - just as it is in real life.
